Israeli Air Attack on Gaza City Kills One Person, Wounds Several Palestinians
An Israeli air attack on Gaza City’s Daraj neighborhood on Wednesday resulted in one fatality and at least nine other injuries to Palestinians, according to medical sources. The incident also seriously wounded Azzam al-Hayya, the son of Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas’s political bureau chief.
The attack occurred during a day marked by multiple Israeli air raids across Gaza City, resulting in additional fatalities and injuries. Two other air raids on Wednesday killed four others, including a senior colonel in Gaza’s police force.
Khalil al-Hayya identified the man who was killed as Hamza al-Sharbasi. In a statement to Al Jazeera, he expressed solidarity with his fellow Palestinians, stating that “our sons are the sons of the Palestinian people.” He also reiterated Hamas’s stance on the conflict, saying that “neither the killing of our sons nor the martyrdom of our leaders will intimidate us.”
The incident follows previous Israeli attempts on al-Hayya’s life, resulting in the loss of three sons. A Hamas official and aide to Hayya condemned the attack as a “blatant violation” of a ceasefire agreement signed last year.
According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, at least 837 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire was implemented last year. Over 2,381 others have been wounded. The United Nations has reported dire and life-threatening conditions across Gaza, with humanitarian action continuing to be constrained.
The Israeli military has not commented on the incident.
