Israeli Strikes Kill Two in Lebanon, UN Reports Drone Attack

UN Peacekeepers Report Incident Involving Drone Strike in Southern Lebanon

A drone reportedly dropped a grenade on UN peacekeeping troops in southern Lebanon, prompting a stop-fire request from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The incident occurred during ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, an “Israeli enemy strike” on a vehicle in Mansuri killed one person. A separate strike on Mayfadun killed another person, with Israel claiming the victim was a Hezbollah member involved in attempts to reestablish infrastructure in the Zawtar al-Sharqiyah area.

UNIFIL has issued a statement expressing concern over the incident, stating that such activities pose risks to civilians and peacekeepers alike. The organization cited United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 as a basis for its concerns, which aims to maintain a ceasefire in southern Lebanon.

The UN Security Council had previously decided to end UNIFIL’s mandate on December 31, 2026, with a one-year plan for a phased drawdown of forces. However, the Israeli military has continued to violate the ceasefire agreement since late November 2024, resulting in hundreds of casualties.

UN peacekeepers are deployed in southern Lebanon to monitor the cessation of hostilities and support the Lebanese army’s presence south of the Litani River. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with Lebanon facing pressure from the US and Israel to disarm the militant group.
