Israelis face uncertainty as economic strain mounts nationwide

Israel’s Ongoing Conflict with Iran Has Lasting Impacts on Politics, Economy, and Society

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has had significant effects on the country’s politics, economy, and society. The war, which began in October 2023, has resulted in substantial financial losses for Israel, with estimates suggesting that the nation’s wars since then have cost it approximately $112 billion.

According to the Bank of Israel, the total cost of these conflicts is over $352 billion, or roughly $300 million per day. The International Court of Justice has issued credible accusations of genocide against Israel, and both the prime minister and former minister of defense are facing arrest warrants for war crimes from the International Criminal Court.

Economically, Israel is bracing for potential catastrophic financial consequences due to its ongoing conflict with Iran. Despite claims by US officials that they have essentially defanged Iran militarily, only one-third of Tehran’s missile stock has been destroyed, according to sources within US intelligence.

In Israel, emergency measures such as school closures and air raid warnings are causing strain on families. However, analysts note that despite these challenges, many Jewish Israelis believe the war is inevitable and are determined to continue it for now. A recent survey found that 78% of Jewish Israelis support continuing the war, although a majority also think that planners underestimated Iran’s abilities.

The current conflict has taken place against the backdrop of a significantly altered Israeli politics, with figures such as National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich holding extremist views. The future outcome of the conflict remains uncertain, with no clear end in sight.
