Israel’s Military Actions in Lebanon Target Water Infrastructure
A recent escalation of violence between Israel and Lebanon has resulted in significant damage to the country’s water infrastructure. According to experts, Israel’s strikes on critical water facilities and near sites being repaired after prior damage have effectively turned access to water into a weapon.
The attacks, which began on March 2, have displaced over 1.2 million people in southern Lebanon, according to reports. The Israeli military has also killed journalists, medical workers, and devastated the region’s medical infrastructure.
Experts say that Israel’s actions are part of a broader strategy to create an uninhabitable buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The country is currently occupying dozens of villages in the area and preventing thousands from returning home.
The destruction of water infrastructure is a key component of this strategy, with Israel damaging six facilities in southern Lebanon during previous attacks since 2023. In the first four days of the renewed conflict this year, at least seven critical water sources were damaged, including reservoirs, pipe networks, and pumping stations that supplied water to nearly 7,000 people.
Lebanon’s water infrastructure is being “directly and indirectly attacked” by Israel, according to environmental engineer Nadim Farajalla. The indirect attacks have hit the electricity infrastructure, making it difficult for pumping stations to function, while direct attacks have targeted municipal workers operating water wells.
The aim behind these attacks appears to be to force people to leave their homes, as without access to clean water, daily life becomes impossible. Israel has denied that its actions are a deliberate attempt to displace the population, but experts say that this is clearly the case.
