Israels Annexation of West Bank Sparks Global Outcry Over Lack of Accountability

Amnesty International Criticizes International Community’s Inaction on Israel’s Annexation Policies

A statement released by Amnesty International has highlighted the international community’s failure to take decisive action against Israel over its breaches of international law in the occupied West Bank. The human rights group stated that impunity granted to Israel by global powers has emboldened the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to intensify efforts to dispossess Palestinians across the territory.

According to Erika Guevara-Rosas, Amnesty International’s senior director for research, advocacy, policy and campaigns, the lack of international accountability for Israel’s actions has contributed to the escalation of its annexation policies. The group cited the unconditional support of the US government and the pervasive lack of action by global powers as factors that have emboldened Israel.

Amnesty International noted that countries have refused to use available tools, such as suspending the European Union-Israel Association Agreement, to deter Israel from its actions. The West Bank has been under Israeli occupation since 1967, with the territory’s contiguity increasingly fragmented by the construction of hundreds of Israeli housing units.

The group highlighted the expansion of illegal settlements and state-backed settler violence in the territory as a direct result of the international community’s failure to take decisive action. Since October 2023, at least 1,094 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops and settlers in the West Bank, according to UN figures.

Amnesty International also noted that the UN Human Rights Council has warned about the systematic use of force by the Israeli army and unlawful demolitions of Palestinian homes, which aim to uproot Palestinian communities. The group stated that Israel’s actions are a direct result of its failure to comply with international law, despite previous rulings by the International Court of Justice and a UN General Assembly resolution setting a deadline for the end of its occupation.

The situation in the West Bank remains complex, with ongoing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. Amnesty International has called on global powers to take decisive action to address Israel’s annexation policies and ensure accountability for its actions.
