US and Israeli Forces Launch Attack on Iranian Gas Facility
Iran has launched a series of attacks on energy facilities in several Gulf nations, including Qatar’s Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, the United Arab Emirates’ Habshan gas facilities, and Saudi Arabia. The attacks come amid the ongoing war between Iran and Israel, which began on February 28.
On Wednesday, Israel launched a strike on Iran’s South Pars LNG facility, killing Iranian Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib. In response, Iran has targeted Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG facility, causing three fires and extensive damage. The Ministry of the Interior reported that no injuries were recorded.
US President Donald Trump has issued a statement warning Iran that further attacks on Qatar would result in “massive” consequences. He also described Israel’s attack on South Pars as having “violently lashed out” at the facility, but stated that the US had “nothing to do” with the strike.
Qatar has responded by expelling Iranian attaches and declaring them “persona non grata”. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack on Ras Laffan as a “direct threat” to national security. Saudi Arabia has also reported intercepting and destroying four ballistic missiles launched towards Riyadh, while UAE authorities have shut down facilities due to falling debris from intercepted missiles.
Iran has warned that further attacks on its Gulf neighbours would be met with force. The situation remains tense, with the possibility of retaliatory attacks by Gulf countries against Iran. A meeting of foreign ministers from 12 Muslim-majority countries in Riyadh on Wednesday discussed the escalating conflict and potential consequences for regional stability.
The attacks have raised concerns about global energy supply and the long-term implications of the conflict.
