Gaza Faces Economic Crisis Amid Tightened Restrictions
As the world focuses on the Iran conflict, Israel has tightened its grip on Gaza, restricting the flow of goods and aid. The restrictions are exacerbating shortages, price hikes, and growing hardship for millions in Gaza. With Eid al-Fitr approaching, a time meant to be marked by joy and family gatherings, many are struggling under deepening economic crisis.
The economic situation in Gaza is complex, influenced by factors such as the Israeli occupation, local market dynamics, and regional and international strategies. Israel has used external tensions, including those involving Iran or Lebanon, to justify tightening restrictions on goods movement through crossings while intensifying military pressure on Gaza.
Residents are facing soaring prices for essential commodities, with some traders taking advantage of the crisis to make excessive profits. For example, tomatoes that previously cost 3 shekels ($0.97) now sell for 20 shekels ($6.48). Cooking gas has increased from 18 shekels ($5.83) per unit to 25 shekels ($8.10), making it difficult for families to secure basic necessities.
The price hikes are not limited to food and cooking gas, with meat becoming prohibitively expensive and essential medicines increasingly inaccessible at reasonable prices. Even simple Eid traditions are now out of reach for many due to the economic fragility and psychological pressure faced by residents.
The ongoing war, repeated ceasefire violations, and Israel’s broader strategy of using external conflicts as justification for military pressure have turned Gaza into a focal point for regional tensions and military calculations. The local market is fragile, with monopolisation of goods and unjustified price hikes making it difficult to stabilise prices or increase supply.
The international community is being called upon to take meaningful action, including ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid, protecting civilians from exploitation, and preventing human suffering.
