Israels far-right leader faces criticism over alleged flotilla abuse footage

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir Releases Video of Detained Activists

A video released by Mr. Ben-Gvir’s office shows him interacting with foreign activists who were detained by Israeli forces in international waters while attempting to reach a Gaza-bound aid flotilla. The activists, from over 46 countries, are seen being held at a makeshift holding pen in Ashdod.

The video has sparked global condemnation, with several countries including Italy and France summoning Israeli ambassadors to explain the situation. The video also drew criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Ambassador Mike Huckabee.

Mr. Ben-Gvir, a 50-year-old lawyer and politician, has led the far-right Jewish Power party in Israel since 2019. He was appointed as national security minister and given control of Israel’s Border Police division in the occupied West Bank.

The Gaza aid flotillas, which have been attempting to deliver humanitarian aid and raise awareness since October 2023, have faced significant challenges from Israeli forces. Since 2010, nearly every flotilla has been intercepted in international waters, resulting in the detention of hundreds of activists.

In the video, a woman is seen approaching Mr. Ben-Gvir and saying “Free Palestine!” before being detained by security officers. The minister then appears to taunt the activists, stating “Welcome to Israel. We are the landowners here; that is how it should be.” The activists are then seen in “stress positions” with their arms tied behind their backs.

The video has been met with sharp rebukes from various individuals and countries. Mr. Ben-Gvir has a history of controversy, including convictions for incitement to racism and supporting a designated terrorist organization. He frequently carries out anti-Palestinian acts, including storming the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem.

The video’s release has sparked widespread criticism, with many calling for an explanation from the Israeli government. The situation remains under investigation.
