Direct Flight Between Israel and Argentina Launched Amid Strengthening Ties
A direct flight between Tel Aviv and Buenos Aires was launched by El Al, Israel’s national carrier, on May 7, marking a significant development in the strengthening of ties between the two countries. The twice-a-week flight covers a distance of 12,000 kilometers and is expected to operate for an extended period.
The launch of the flight coincides with the visit of Argentine President Javier Milei to Israel last month, where he was welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During the event, Netanyahu hailed the “first direct flight” between the two nations, while US Ambassador Mike Huckabee joked about purchasing the first ticket and described the two leaders as close allies.
The route is part of a broader effort to establish strategic cooperation in security, counterterrorism, and artificial intelligence with Latin American nations. This framework, inspired by the Abraham Accords, aims to promote cooperation between Israel and countries in the region.
Israel’s national carrier has stated that the flight will operate on a commercial basis, but analysts suggest that the route may be driven more by political ambitions than commercial viability. Ihab Jabarin, an analyst specializing in Israeli affairs, noted that Israel is seeking to leverage its advanced military and surveillance technologies to secure recognition and bypass boycotts.
The launch of the direct flight marks another step in Israel’s efforts to expand its geopolitical footprint in Latin America. The country has already established ties with several nations in the region, including Ethiopia, Kenya, and Chad. This move is seen as part of a broader strategy to create a global network of interests that forces countries to weigh their relationship with Israel against their stance on the Palestinian cause.
The ideological bond between Netanyahu and Milei is believed to be a driving force behind this development. While some left-wing leaders in the region have severed ties or strongly condemned Israel’s actions, Milei has taken a more unconditional approach to the Israeli narrative.
