Multiple Regional Blocs Condemn Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland as Independent State
The Arab League, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and African Union (AU) have joined numerous countries in criticizing Israel’s formal recognition of the northern Somali breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has sought international recognition for decades.
Israel announced on Friday that it views Somaliland as an “independent and sovereign state,” becoming the first country to make such a declaration. This move prompted Somalia to call the decision a “deliberate attack” on its sovereignty, which would undermine regional peace.
The AU rejected Israel’s move, warning that it could set a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the continent. The Arab League Secretary-General described the action as a “clear violation of international law” and a “flagrant infringement of the principle of state unity.” The GCC also condemned the development, stating that it represented a grave violation of international law and a blatant infringement of Somalia’s sovereignty.
Other countries, including the European Union, Egypt, Turkey, Djibouti, Qatar, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and China, have also rejected Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. The Palestinian Authority and Hamas also condemned the move.
Somalia demanded that Israel reverse its recognition of Somaliland as independent, calling it an act of “aggression that will never be tolerated.” However, Somaliland leader Abdullahi hailed Israel’s decision as a “historic moment” and stated that it marked the beginning of a “strategic partnership.”
The United States President Donald Trump commented on the issue, stating that Washington would not recognize Somaliland. Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked armed group in Somalia, pledged to fight any attempt by Israel to claim or use parts of Somaliland.
These countries have issued statements condemning Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, with many emphasizing the importance of respecting international law and Somalia’s sovereignty.
