Gaza’s Health System Faced with Critical Shortage of Electricity
The health system in Gaza is facing a critical shortage of electricity, which may lead to rationing of power in the coming hours. The situation has been exacerbated by Israel’s ongoing war on the enclave, which has decimated the healthcare infrastructure.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 1,700 healthcare workers have lost their lives since the start of the conflict. Medical facilities across the region have been damaged or destroyed, leaving doctors and medical personnel struggling to treat patients with limited equipment.
The Al-Aqsa Hospital in central Gaza is currently facing a dire situation due to the failure of its main generators. The hospital’s backup generators are also unreliable and may shut down at any moment due to a lack of fuel and spare parts. Medical teams have expressed concerns that without these generators, critical life-saving services and departments will be severely impacted.
The United Nations has accused Israel of targeting Gaza’s health facilities and killing medical personnel in an attempt to destroy the enclave’s healthcare system. Despite a ceasefire agreement in place since October, Israel continues to violate its terms daily, with attacks and restrictions on the flow of humanitarian aid.
The shortage of electricity is expected to worsen if spare parts or oil cannot be brought into Gaza. The hospital may need to ration power to prioritize critical wards, which could further exacerbate the already dire situation.
