Istanbul Sees Large Protests in Solidarity with Gaza Region

Thousands of people gathered in Istanbul’s historic Galata Bridge on Thursday for a large-scale demonstration in solidarity with Palestinians. The event was organized by civil society groups under the National Will Platform alongside Turkish football clubs, with over 400 organizations participating. The march, which drew an estimated 500,000 attendees, featured protesters waving Palestinian and Turkish flags.

The rally took place despite freezing temperatures and was attended by supporters from various political backgrounds. Several major football clubs urged their fans to participate, contributing to the event’s large turnout. Galatasaray football club chair Dursun Ozbek stated that Israel’s actions were a moral reckoning for the world in a video message.

The demonstration was also marked by speeches and performances, including a rendition of “Free Palestine” by Lebanese-born singer Maher Zain. Many protesters rejected the Israeli narrative surrounding the ceasefire, instead viewing it as a slow-motion genocide against Palestinians.

Turkish authorities have taken steps to distance themselves from Israel, including cutting trade and closing airspace and ports. However, demonstrators emphasized the need for sustained international pressure rather than symbolic measures. According to Al Jazeera’s Turkiye correspondent, Sinem Koseoglu, protesters aim to show their solidarity with the Palestinian people and raise awareness about the situation in Gaza.

The event highlights the widespread public anger towards Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza. Despite the ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump in October, bloodshed has continued, with over 400 Palestinians killed since its implementation. Aid remains withheld from entering the besieged Strip.
