Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Met with Qatar’s Emir in Doha
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Qatar on Saturday as part of a regional tour, becoming the first EU and NATO country leader to do so since the war began. The meeting took place in Doha, where Meloni also met with Saudi Arabia’s leaders earlier that day.
According to a statement from her office, Meloni discussed energy issues with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, including possible measures to mitigate the effects of the ongoing conflict on Iran. Meloni stated that Rome is willing to contribute to the rehabilitation of Qatari energy infrastructure, which is essential for global energy security.
Italy relies heavily on imported energy and is concerned about rising prices due to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil and liquefied natural gas. The Qatari emir’s office stated that both leaders emphasized the need for de-escalation and prioritized political dialogue and diplomacy to address the crisis in the Middle East.
The meeting also covered bilateral cooperation between Italy and Qatar, with discussions on ways to support and develop their relationship in various fields, particularly in the economy and energy. Iran has targeted US and Israeli targets in the region, including a missile strike on Ras Laffan Industrial City, which caused significant damage to Qatari energy installations.
Meloni’s trip aimed to strengthen relations with Gulf countries and demonstrate Italy’s support for these nations against Iranian attacks. The region is a crucial source of oil and gas for Italy, making Meloni’s visit an important step in maintaining regional stability.
