Italy rules out participation in Trumps proposed Board of Peace initiative

Italy Declines Invitation to Join US President’s “Board of Peace” Due to Constitutional Limitations

Italy has ruled out joining the “Board of Peace”, a self-styled international organization led by US President Donald Trump, due to constitutional limitations. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that conflicts between Italy’s constitution and the board’s charter are “insurmountable from a legal standpoint”.

The decision comes despite close ties between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Trump. Tajani cited Article 11 of the Italian constitution, which prohibits the country from joining organizations unless there is equality with other states. He noted that the board’s charter does not provide for such conditions.

Tajani also expressed willingness to discuss peace initiatives with the US government. In a recent meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Vice President JD Vance, he stated that Italy would be prepared to contribute to peace efforts in Gaza by training police forces.

The “Board of Peace” has faced criticism for its perceived lack of transparency and potential for favoritism. The organization’s charter does not mention the war-torn Palestinian enclave, despite its name suggesting a focus on international conflict mediation.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a key ally of Trump, has announced plans to attend the board’s first meeting in Washington, DC, scheduled for February 19. The gathering will take place one day after a meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The “Board of Peace” was established by Trump last month, inviting over 60 countries to join. As of reporting, its website listed 26 member countries, including Qatar and Egypt.
