Italys Coach Gattuso Fired After Failing to Qualify for 2026 World Cup

Italian Football Federation Announces Coach Gennaro Gattuso’s Departure

The Italian football federation has announced that coach Gennaro Gattuso will be leaving his position “by mutual consent”. The decision comes three days after Italy failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.

Gattuso, who was appointed in June on a one-year contract, had previously led the team to five consecutive wins in group games. However, despite this success, they were ultimately eliminated from the tournament by Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shootout.

In a statement, Gattuso expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the national team, citing the “Azzurri shirt” as the most precious asset in football. He also acknowledged that he had made the decision to step down due to the team’s failure to achieve their goal.

The Italian federation has thanked Gattuso for his dedication and passion during his nine-month tenure. The news of Gattuso’s departure follows a day of significant changes within the federation, with president Gabriele Gravina and Gianluigi Buffon also resigning from their positions.
