Ugandan Runner Reclaims Men’s Half-Marathon World Record
Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda has set a new men’s half-marathon world record, completing the course in 57 minutes and 20 seconds at the Lisbon event. This achievement marks a significant improvement on his previous record, which he set five years ago.
Kiplimo began the race with a strong pace, covering the first 5km in 13:28. He was closely followed by Kenyans Nicholas Kipkorir and Gilbert Kiprotich. As they approached the 10km mark, Kiprotich dropped out of contention. The remaining two runners maintained their pace as they entered the final stretch.
Kiplimo accelerated in the last 5km, maintaining a consistent pace to secure the record. His time was 10 seconds faster than Yomif Kejelcha’s previous record set two years ago. Kipkorir finished second, 48 seconds behind the winner, while Kiprotich came third, one minute and 39 seconds off the pace.
Kiplimo had previously broken the 57-minute barrier for the half-marathon last year in Barcelona, but his achievement was not ratified by World Athletics due to non-compliance with rules. The current record is recognized as a significant achievement in the world of athletics.
