Japan Wins Women’s Asian Cup Final with 1-0 Victory Over Australia
In the final of the Women’s Asian Cup, held at Stadium Australia in Sydney, Japan edged out tournament hosts Australia by a score of 1-0. The match drew a record-breaking crowd of 74,357 fans, surpassing the previous attendance record set in 2010.
Maika Hamano scored the winning goal for Japan in the 17th minute with a long-range strike that found the top corner of the net. This marked Japan’s third Women’s Asian Cup title in four editions, following their victories in 2014 and 2018 against Australia.
The tournament saw a significant increase in attendance, with over 350,000 fans attending games throughout the competition. The final match set a new attendance record for a single game in tournament history.
Japan’s team, which included several English-based players, was undefeated throughout their run to the final. They were composed and well-defended, ultimately emerging victorious despite Australia’s strong performance.
Australia made one change to their starting lineup for the final, with Wini Heatley replacing Clare Hunt in central defense. The hosts had several scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them, including a missed chance by Caitlin Foord in the 11th minute.
Japan’s goalkeeper, Ayaka Yamashita, made several key saves throughout the match, including one that denied Foord in the 11th minute. Despite Australia’s intense pressure in the final minutes of the game, Japan remained solid and secured the win.
The victory marked a significant milestone for women’s football in Asia, with over 350,000 fans attending the tournament. The Asian Cup also served as qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil next year.
