JD Vance warns Iran against letting Lebanon talks collapse

US Vice President JD Vance has stated that Iran had a “legitimate misunderstanding” about Lebanon’s inclusion in the current ceasefire agreement. During a press conference on Wednesday, Vance clarified that the US did not agree that Israel would stop attacking Lebanon as part of the two-week truce. Vance emphasized that the US and Iran have different interpretations regarding the ceasefire terms.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had previously shared a statement from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announcing the ceasefire, which included Lebanon as part of the agreement. However, Vance attributed the discrepancy to a “misunderstanding” between the parties involved.

US President Donald Trump and his administration have maintained that Lebanon was not part of the deal. Vance acknowledged that there is a “legitimate misunderstanding” between Iran and the US regarding the ceasefire terms. He also noted that there has been “bad faith negotiation” and “propaganda” going on, which he believes contributed to the misunderstanding.

The conflict in Lebanon has intensified since early March, following a rocket attack by Hezbollah against Israel. The situation remains volatile, with both sides accusing each other of aggression. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that fighting would resume if Israel fails to observe the ceasefire in Lebanon. Vance suggested that Israel had agreed to show restraint in Lebanon, but acknowledged that the US and Iran have different perspectives on the matter.

The situation remains unclear, with both parties continuing to negotiate and accuse each other of misrepresenting the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
