Veteran Actor Juliet Stevenson Discusses Palestinian Rights Campaign
London, United Kingdom - Actress Juliet Stevenson has been actively involved in a campaign to raise awareness about the situation of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Over the past two years, she has used her platform to speak out against Israel’s actions and advocate for maternal healthcare access.
Stevenson recently joined forces with other prominent cultural figures, including Judi Dench, Meera Syal, and Sienna Miller, to write a letter to Justine Roberts, founder of Mumsnet, an online forum popular among mothers. The group is seeking pressure on the UK government to demand that Israel allow maternity clinics stuck in Egypt into Gaza and provide access to NGOs delivering aid, particularly essential items for women and girls.
Stevenson spoke with Al Jazeera about her reasons for appealing to Mumsnet, citing its large user base of nine million monthly users. She emphasized the campaign’s focus on mothers supporting mothers across different backgrounds and divisions. Stevenson described the situation in Gaza as “unimaginably brutal and horrific,” highlighting the need for collective action.
As a mother herself, Stevenson expressed her emotional response to witnessing the suffering in Gaza. She stated that it is unacceptable for politicians to ignore the plight of Palestinian parents who are facing unimaginable hardship, including child amputations, family losses, and maternal healthcare shortages.
Stevenson’s activism has been ongoing for many years, driven by her initial learning about the Palestinian situation. Her husband’s Jewish heritage and his mother’s experience as a refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria have influenced her understanding of the issue. Despite the risks to her career, Stevenson remains committed to speaking out against injustice and advocating for human rights.
Stevenson’s campaign aims to mobilize mothers across the UK to support Palestinian parents through their communities, including Mumsnet. The letter to Roberts has been met with a response from the founder, who will meet with the group.
