The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has released a report detailing the number of journalists killed globally in 2025. According to the IFJ, a total of 128 journalists were killed worldwide last year, with 56 being Palestinian. The Middle East region accounted for the most deaths, with 74 journalists and media workers killed.
The IFJ also reported that Africa had 18 deaths, Asia Pacific had 15, the Americas had 11, and Europe had 10. The majority of those killed were men, but 10 women were also among the victims.
The report highlights the deadliest places to work as a journalist in 2025, with Palestine being the most dangerous location. Yemen followed, with 13 deaths, Ukraine with eight, and Sudan with six. The IFJ cited Israel’s killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif as an example of the violence faced by journalists.
The report also notes that 13 journalists were killed in a single attack on a newspaper office in Yemen, while nine deaths were ruled as accidents. Two journalists in Syria and two in Iran were also targeted and killed due to their work.
In terms of detentions, the Asia Pacific region accounted for the largest number of journalists behind bars, with most cases occurring in China and Hong Kong. Europe was another hotspot for detention, with 149 imprisoned journalists attributed to intensified repression in Azerbaijan and Russia.
