Kansas City to host 2026 FIFA World Cup in unexpected bid

Kansas City Secures World Cup Venue Spot Amidst Overcoming Odds

A major milestone has been achieved by Kansas City, Missouri, as it has become one of the 11 venues in the United States to host the upcoming World Cup tournament. The city’s Arrowhead Stadium will play host to six matches, including a potential quarterfinal between Argentina and Portugal.

According to recent data from the 2020 census, Kansas City is the 37th most populous city in the US. However, it has managed to secure its spot as one of the hosting cities despite being significantly smaller than many other participating cities.

In 2017, an initial bid list included 37 stadiums across 34 cities, with four of them having previously hosted the World Cup in 1994. The Kansas City organizing committee made a concerted effort to improve its chances by investing over $650 million in stadiums and training facilities.

During the bidding process, the local committee employed various tactics to impress FIFA officials, including setting up a mock football village at the decaying Kansas City Municipal Airport. They also provided volunteers to guide visitors around town and showed them the new airport location during their visit.

The committee’s efforts paid off as they secured their spot among the hosting cities. While acknowledging that there was still uncertainty surrounding their chances, they were ultimately successful in securing a 50-50 chance of being selected.

Kansas City’s unique situation has allowed it to capitalize on its central location and transportation advantages. The city’s airport is located just 22 minutes from Arrowhead Stadium, making it an attractive option for visitors. Additionally, the local committee was able to secure more than 225 buses for public transportation, addressing a major concern about distances.

The Kansas City organizing committee’s efforts have transformed the city’s reputation and secured its place among the hosting cities.
