Kim Jong Un Re-Elected as Chief of North Koreas Workers Party

North Korean Leader Re-Elected as Secretary-General of Workers’ Party

Kim Jong Un has been re-elected as the secretary-general of North Korea’s Workers’ Party, solidifying his 15-year rule over the country’s sole governing party. The election took place on Sunday during the fourth day of the party congress, which is held every five years.

According to state news agency KCNA, Central Committee members were also elected, and some party rules were modified without providing further details. Kim has been North Korea’s supreme leader since 2011, following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il.

During this year’s Workers’ Party Congress, Kim assessed the party’s last five years of work and outlined new strategies and goals for the next five-year period. In a statement, Kim emphasized the need to boost economic construction and improve the standard of living, as well as transform all aspects of state and social life.

Kim also acknowledged challenges such as sanctions and global health crises, stating that these require “a more active and persistent struggle without allowing even a moment’s standstill or stagnation.” Other high-ranking officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui, delivered remarks at the Congress.

The re-election marks a significant milestone in Kim’s rule, which has been marked by a shift in priorities from military might to economic development. Ahead of the congress, Kim held a ceremony unveiling dozens of nuclear-capable rocket launchers, describing them as “wonderful” and “attractive.”
