North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Visits New Homes for Families of Fallen Soldiers
Pyongyang, North Korea - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has toured a newly constructed residential street in Pyongyang, according to state media. The street, located on Saeppyol Street, is home to families of soldiers who have died fighting in Ukraine.
Photographs released by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) show Kim Jong Un visiting the new homes with his daughter, Ju Ae, who has been identified as a potential successor. The KCNA reported that Kim said the new street was built “thanks to the ardent desire of our motherland” and that it would provide a place for families of fallen soldiers to live.
The unveiling of the new homes comes ahead of the ruling Workers’ Party congress in Pyongyang, scheduled for this month. Observers are monitoring Kim’s announcements on foreign and domestic policy directions, as well as any potential official titles for Ju Ae.
According to South Korea’s intelligence agency, North Korea has dispatched thousands of soldiers to fight in Ukraine, with an estimated 2,000 casualties. Experts suggest that North Korea receives financial aid, military technology, and essential supplies from Russia in exchange for its support.
The KCNA reported that Kim pledged to “unconditionally support” all policies and decisions made by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The timing of the street inauguration has been described as a “highly calculated political move” by analysts, who see it as an effort to justify North Korea’s soldier deployment before the party congress.
