Mercedes Driver Wins Japanese Grand Prix, Takes Championship Lead
Kimi Antonelli, a 19-year-old Italian driver, secured his second consecutive Formula One victory at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday. The win marked a historic milestone for Antonelli, as he became the youngest driver in F1 history to lead the world championship standings.
Antonelli started from pole position and initially struggled, sinking to sixth by the first corner. However, he made significant gains throughout the race, taking advantage of a mid-race safety car to leapfrog into the lead. He eventually crossed the finish line ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
The win was Antonelli’s second consecutive victory, following his first Grand Prix win two weeks ago in China. Mercedes teammate George Russell finished fourth, while McLaren’s Lando Norris took fifth place. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly followed in sixth and seventh respectively.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, started from 11th on the grid but ultimately finished eighth. The race was marked by several incidents, including a crash involving Haas driver Ollie Bearman, which brought out the safety car midway through the event.
The win propelled Antonelli to the top of the championship standings, with three races completed so far. Formula One will take an extended break until the Miami Grand Prix on May 3, following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
