King Charles III Delivers Speech to US Congress Amid Ongoing Visit
During a four-day visit to the United States, King Charles III addressed the US Congress on Tuesday, delivering a speech that highlighted shared history and values between the two nations. The monarch praised the “shared history and values” of the UK and US, joking about the similarity in names between Washington, DC, and his ancestor, King George.
The sovereign’s address was met with repeated standing ovations from lawmakers. In his remarks, Charles emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among NATO allies, referencing the alliance’s invocation of Article 5 collective defense treaty following the September 11, 2001 attacks. He also expressed support for Ukraine’s defense efforts, calling on lawmakers to demonstrate “unyielding resolve” in defending the country.
Charles also touched on trade between the two nations, highlighting the $430 billion in annual trade and $1.7 trillion in mutual investment that fuels innovation. Additionally, he mentioned global environmental concerns, noting the importance of natural systems in providing the foundation for prosperity and national security.
The monarch’s speech was notable for its absence of direct references to specific issues, including the US-Israel war with Iran and President Donald Trump’s criticism of NATO allies. However, Charles did reference common ideals between the two nations, such as the rule of law and independent judiciary. The address came ahead of an official state dinner hosted by President Trump and his wife, Queen Camilla.
The royal couple will continue their visit to New York and Virginia before an official farewell ceremony at the White House on Thursday.
