Kurdish Fighters Withdraw from Aleppo After Days of Clashes in Syria

Aleppo Governor Reports Last SDF Fighters Depart City

Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib has confirmed that the last fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have left the city of Aleppo, following a ceasefire agreement and coordinated evacuation efforts. According to al-Gharib, the city is now “empty of SDF fighters” after government forces oversaw their withdrawal on buses overnight.

The SDF commander, Mazloum Abdi, stated that his group had reached an understanding through international mediation for a ceasefire and safe evacuation of civilians and fighters from the Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods to northern and eastern Syria. He called on mediators to adhere to their promises to stop violations and facilitate a safe return for displaced individuals to their homes.

The development follows days of clashes in the Kurdish-majority neighborhood of Sheikh Maqsoud, which was taken over by the Syrian army after talks to integrate the SDF into the national army broke down. The evacuation of SDF fighters from the area has been facilitated through a ceasefire agreement.
