Local Elections See Early Gains for Reform UK, Labour Sees Heavy Defeats
Early results from local elections in the United Kingdom indicate that Nigel Farage’s populist party Reform UK has made significant gains, particularly in Labour heartlands. As of 12:45pm local time (11:45 GMT), Reform UK had gained 339 seats, while Labour had lost over 208 councillors.
Labour Party leader Keir Starmer acknowledged the early results and expressed his willingness to take responsibility for the outcome. In a statement, he said that “days like this don’t weaken my resolve to deliver the change I promised.” He also noted that the results are “tough” and that Labour has lost many talented representatives across the country.
According to Al Jazeera’s Camille Nedelec, these elections serve as a bellwether for the broader political landscape. The cost of living was identified as the top concern by voters in an Ipsos survey conducted before the local elections.
Reform UK has made early gains in Greater Manchester and the Liverpool City Region, with more results still to be reported. In some areas, Reform UK has ended long-standing Labour dominance, including in Wigan and Leigh, where the party won 24 of 25 seats. Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire also switched from the Conservatives to Reform UK.
The Conservative Party is also experiencing losses, with 139 seats being taken by other parties. The Greens have gained only 23 seats so far, despite initial expectations that they would challenge Labour from the left.
The local elections will continue throughout the day, with six mayoral elections taking place in London and all 129 seats in the Scottish Parliament up for grabs.
