Labour leader Keir Starmer faces mounting pressure to step down

UK Prime Minister’s Office Faces Criticism Over Security Vetting Process

London, UK - Keir Starmer, the UK prime minister, has announced his intention to resign amid renewed calls for his departure over the controversy surrounding Peter Mandelson’s appointment as envoy to Washington.

Mandelson was appointed in February 2025, despite failing security vetting. The Foreign Office had recommended against his appointment due to concerns about his ties to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. However, the office overruled this recommendation and informed Starmer of the decision after he became aware of it on Tuesday.

Starmer has denied knowing about the outcome of Mandelson’s vetting before being informed by the Foreign Office. He has pledged to provide “relevant facts” in a transparent manner to Parliament on Monday.

The controversy has led to criticism from opposition parties, with Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch accusing Starmer of not knowing about the security assessment and calling the story “completely preposterous”.

Darren Jones, chief secretary to the prime minister, stated that the Foreign Office ignored the recommendation not to appoint Mandelson. He described this as “astonishing” but within the rules.

The UK Security Vetting department is responsible for carrying out background checks on government officials. According to people familiar with the process, it involves sensitive personal information and is typically kept confidential due to its nature.

Police have launched an investigation into allegations of misconduct in office by Mandelson, who was arrested and bailed in February. The probe is examining claims he leaked sensitive documents to Epstein during his time as a government minister.
