Labours lead narrowed as Green Party takes UK by-election seat

A Green Party candidate has won a by-election in a traditionally Labour-held constituency in Greater Manchester, marking a significant shift in the UK’s electoral landscape. Hannah Spencer, a 34-year-old councillor and plumber, secured 40.7 percent of the vote in the Gorton and Denton parliamentary seat, which had been considered a secure Labour stronghold for nearly a century.

The Green Party has positioned itself as an alternative to the governing Labour Party, with its leader Zack Polanski criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza and supporting Palestinian rights. This stance has resonated with some Labour voters who have expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s diplomatic support for Israel.

Labour Party chair Anna Turley described the result as “clearly disappointing”. The party had won more than half the vote in Gorton and Denton at the last general election, but failed to retain the seat. The loss adds to pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has faced calls for his resignation amid Labour’s declining popularity.

The Green Party’s victory marks its fifth parliamentary seat, while the Reform party, led by Nigel Farage, secured eight seats in the contest. Both parties are polling in double digits, posing a threat to the traditional Labour-Conservative duopoly in British politics.

Spencer’s win was seen as a seismic moment in British politics, with analysts describing it as a sign of the fracturing of the UK’s two-party system. In response to Reform leader Farage’s claims that the Green Party’s victory was “a victory for sectarian voting and cheating”, a Greens spokesperson dismissed his comments as an attempt to undermine the democratic result.

The by-election was triggered after former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne stood down due to health reasons. The contest has highlighted the growing uncertainty in British politics, with many parties vying for attention and support.
