LA Lakers Fall Short Against Oklahoma City Thunder in Western Conference Semifinals
The LA Lakers suffered a 108-90 defeat at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder in their NBA Western Conference semifinal series opener. LeBron James led the team with 27 points, but it was not enough to overcome the Thunder’s balanced offense and strong defense.
Chet Holmgren led the Thunder with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 18 points. The Thunder’s defense restricted the Lakers to their lowest score in a playoff game since 2021, holding them to just three quarters of scoring.
The Thunder’s victory marked a significant challenge for the fourth-seeded Lakers, who face an uphill battle if they are to upset the reigning NBA champions. Oklahoma City completed a 4-0 regular-season sweep over the Lakers, winning each game by an average margin of 29.3 points.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick attributed his team’s problems to unforced errors, stating that “the mistakes hurt us” and that they need to clean up their execution. The Thunder’s victory underscored the size of the task facing the Lakers if they are to defy the odds and upset the champions in the best-of-seven series.
In other playoff news, the Detroit Pistons beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 111-101 in their NBA Eastern Conference semifinal series opener. Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 23 points, while Donovan Mitchell scored 23 points for the Cavaliers. The Pistons dominated the first half and took a 17-point lead in the third period, but the Cavaliers rallied to close the gap before Detroit pulled clear again in the fourth quarter.
The top-seeded Pistons look to build on their win and avoid a repeat of last year’s series against the Orlando Magic.
