Harvard University Professor Larry Summers Resigns Amid Revelations of Ties to Disgraced Sex Offender
Former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has announced his intention to resign from his professorship at Harvard University, effective at the end of the academic semester. The decision comes after documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, were recently released by the government.
According to a statement from Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy Weinstein, Summers’ resignation was accepted in connection with the ongoing review of the university’s relationship with Epstein. The documents, which shed light on Summers’ extensive correspondence with Epstein, include emails where he sought advice on wooing women and had been designated as a successor executor in a 2014 draft of Epstein’s will.
Summers has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime. He previously resigned from the board of OpenAI due to his ties to Epstein, with whom he remained in contact until July 2019. In response to the release of Epstein files in November, Summers stated that he took full responsibility for his decision to continue communicating with Epstein.
The university had announced a review of those named in the documents following the initial release of Epstein files. The latest revelations have led to Summers’ resignation from his leadership position as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government.
