US Officials Push for Control of Greenland Amid Ongoing Talks
A meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Danish and Greenlandic officials is expected to take place next week, as tensions over the autonomous Danish territory continue. Aaja Chemnitz, a member of the Danish parliament representing Greenland, has stated that discussions will be crucial in finding solutions.
Chemnitz emphasized that Greenland’s position on its autonomy remains unchanged, stating “Greenland is not for sale, and Greenland never will be for sale.” The US President has repeatedly expressed interest in taking control of the island, citing its strategic importance in the Arctic region. However, this stance has been met with strong opposition from Greenland, Denmark, the European Union, and other major US allies.
The foreign ministers of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden have reaffirmed their commitment to preserving security, stability, and cooperation in the Arctic. They stressed that matters concerning Denmark and Greenland are for Denmark and Greenland to decide alone.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that “all options are always on the table” for President Trump, although she noted that diplomacy is his first option. The US military’s presence in Venezuela has raised concerns about potential military action in other regions, including Greenland.
US officials have suggested that taking control of Greenland aligns with the Monroe Doctrine, a 19th-century policy aimed at exerting US dominance in the Western Hemisphere. However, the specifics of this plan remain unclear.
Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt has requested a meeting with Rubio to discuss the US’s statements on Greenland. Chemnitz views the planned talks as an opportunity to address rising tensions and emphasize the importance of diplomacy.
