Lawmakers Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib face calls for removal from Congress

US President Donald Trump Criticizes Lawmakers During State of the Union Address

During his State of the Union address, US President Donald Trump engaged in a confrontation with two Democratic lawmakers, Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. The incident occurred when Tlaib and Omar shouted in protest during Trump’s nearly two-hour speech on Tuesday.

Trump later wrote on his Truth Social platform that he believed Tlaib and Omar had behaved like “crooked and corrupt politicians” who should be removed from the US. He described their behavior as “uncontrollable” and stated that they looked like they should be institutionalized.

Tlaib, a Palestinian American, and Omar, a Somali American, criticized Trump’s administration’s immigration crackdown during his speech. Tlaib represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which has been affected by the administration’s policies. In January, two US citizens were killed by federal officers in Minnesota while protesting against immigration raids.

Trump had previously made comments suggesting that Tlaib and Omar should “go back where they came from.” However, he did not mention other lawmakers who also protested during his speech, including Representative Sarah McBride. Trump’s post on Truth Social singled out Tlaib and Omar, but did not provide further context or explanation.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the US government and certain lawmakers, particularly those of color. The State of the Union address is an annual event where the president outlines their legislative agenda and addresses the nation.
