Lebanese President Asserts Countrys Sovereignty Amid Israel Ceasefire Agreement

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has made a statement regarding the country’s future, promising to work towards preserving its sovereignty and freedom. In a televised address on Friday, he announced that Lebanon will no longer be used as a battleground for external conflicts.

The announcement comes after a 10-day ceasefire was declared between Lebanon and Israel, which began on March 2 following an incident involving Hezbollah firing at Israel. The ceasefire has resulted in over 2,200 deaths and more than 1 million displaced persons.

Aoun stated that the country is entering a phase of transition from working towards a ceasefire to negotiating permanent agreements that protect the rights of its citizens, maintain national unity, and preserve sovereignty. He expressed gratitude to individuals who contributed to ending hostilities, including US President Donald Trump and Saudi Arabia.

The president emphasized that any agreement reached will not compromise Lebanon’s rights or territory, and that negotiations are not a sign of weakness. Aoun outlined his objectives, which include stopping Israeli aggression, obtaining Israeli withdrawal, ensuring state authority over all land, releasing prisoners, and allowing families to return home safely.

Despite the ceasefire, Israel continues to occupy areas of southern Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that troops will not withdraw during the ceasefire period.
