Lights Return in War-Scarred Yemeni City of Aden

Aden, Southern Yemen - The city’s residents have reported a significant improvement in their daily lives since the internationally recognized government re-established its presence following the fall of the Southern Transitional Council (STC). Electricity supply has become more reliable, with approximately 20 hours of continuous service per day. This is a notable change from just two months ago, when power outages were common.

The city’s streets appear normal, and people are going about their daily routines as usual. The re-establishment of the government’s presence in Aden is seen as a positive development by observers. A multimillion-dollar fuel grant provided by Saudi Arabia has contributed to the improvement in electricity supply.

Falah al-Shahrani, an adviser to the commander of the Joint Forces Command of the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, has played a key role in managing security and military arrangements in Aden. He has worked with local and military leaders to reposition military camps outside the city and has been instrumental in stabilizing the situation.

The Saudi government’s involvement in Yemen has led to tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE announced its withdrawal from Yemen on December 30, following demands from the Yemeni government. Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan stated that if the UAE leaves Yemen, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will take responsibility.

Some STC leaders have accepted the dissolution of their group and traveled to Riyadh, while others continue to rally support in southern Yemen. The situation remains complex, with multiple groups vying for territory in Yemen.
