FIFA Receives Demands from Union Representing World Cup Venue Workers
A union representing approximately 2,000 food service workers at the Los Angeles Stadium has submitted a list of demands to FIFA and stadium owner Kroenke Sports & Entertainment ahead of the upcoming World Cup. Unite Here Local 11, which represents cooks, servers, and bartenders, has requested that FIFA ensure the absence of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from the venue.
The union’s three main demands include a public commitment to prevent ICE involvement in tournament operations, protections for union jobs and working conditions, and support for affordable housing for hospitality workers. Acting Director of ICE Todd Lyons had stated that ICE would play a “key part” in the World Cup, prompting concerns over worker and guest safety.
The union has also expressed opposition to the use of artificial intelligence and automation during the tournament, citing potential job losses among union members. Local 11 has linked its labor demands to broader issues surrounding housing costs in the Los Angeles area, particularly in Inglewood, and is seeking support for a workforce housing fund, restrictions on short-term rentals, and tax measures aimed at funding affordable housing and immigrant family protections.
The union had previously sought meetings with FIFA since Los Angeles was chosen as a host city but has been ignored. The venue will host eight World Cup matches at the stadium, including the US against Paraguay on June 12.
