Louisiana Republican Senator Cassidy Loses Primary After Opposing Trump

US Senator Bill Cassidy Loses Republican Primary in Louisiana

Senator Bill Cassidy has been defeated in the Louisiana Republican primary, falling short of securing enough support to advance to a run-off election. Cassidy, who voted to convict former President Donald Trump during his 2021 impeachment trial, finished behind Representative Julia Letlow and State Treasurer John Fleming in the initial round of voting.

Cassidy was one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. The outcome of the election underscores Trump’s continued influence over the Republican Party, as he has targeted politicians seen as disloyal.

Trump had attacked Cassidy on social media before the vote, calling him “a disloyal disaster” and “a terrible guy”. Cassidy responded to the comments in a post-vote statement, saying that insults from someone of character are not bothersome. Letlow, who won the election, expressed gratitude for Trump’s support during her victory speech.

The Louisiana primary took place amid controversy surrounding a recent US Supreme Court ruling on electoral district maps. The court’s decision weakened part of the Voting Rights Act, leading to delays in redrawing district boundaries. As a result, elections for the US House of Representatives were postponed until further notice.

Cassidy will face Letlow in a second round of voting on June 27. Trump has been backing efforts to remove Republicans who opposed him in various contests, including the Indiana state senate election earlier this month.
