Major gaps remain in US-Iran talks after 85 days of negotiations

Pakistan Army Chief Arrives in Tehran Amid Ongoing Mediation Efforts

Field Marshal Asim Munir, the chief of Pakistan’s army, arrived in Tehran on Friday as diplomatic efforts to broker a peace agreement between Iran and the United States intensified. Pakistani officials are reportedly playing a key role in mediating talks between the two countries.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed that negotiations between Tehran and Washington continue, but acknowledged that significant differences remain unresolved. The spokesperson stated that ending the war, lifting the US blockade, and ensuring stability in the Strait of Hormuz are Iran’s primary objectives in the peace talks.

Separately, allegations of sexual assault against Gaza aid flotilla activists by Israeli forces have sparked international concern. Organisers of the Global Sumud Flotilla reported at least 15 detainees experienced incidents of rape and other forms of assault following their seizure by Israeli authorities in international waters.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s economy is experiencing strain due to ongoing conflicts involving Israel, Hezbollah, and Iran. Business owners in Beirut reported rising fuel and supply costs, driving inflation higher and affecting livelihoods. Economists warn that the conflict could further destabilise Lebanon’s fragile recovery if it continues.

In related news, Qatar has been praised for its support of Pakistani-led mediation efforts.
