Malaysian Football Officials Resign Amid Foreign-Born Players Controversy

Malaysia’s Football Association Executive Committee Resigns Amid Scrutiny

The executive committee of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has resigned, citing a desire to protect the association’s reputation and mitigate potential consequences. The resignations come amid intense scrutiny over the country’s football governance following allegations of eligibility breaches.

In September, FIFA suspended seven foreign-born players for a year after discovering they had submitted false documents claiming Malaysian ancestry. The FAM was fined $400,000 for its role in the scandal. The association has since appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland, where the case is pending.

The CAS temporarily halted FIFA-imposed bans on the players while their appeal was being reviewed, allowing them to continue participating in football-related activities. However, a full inquiry into FAM’s conduct and governance remains ongoing.

FIFA had launched an investigation after receiving a complaint following Malaysia’s 4-0 win over Vietnam in a June Asian Cup qualifier. The FAM said the CAS had approved its request for a stay of execution, allowing the players to continue their careers until a final ruling is made.

The resignations of the executive committee members come as part of a broader crisis surrounding Malaysian football. All committee members stepped down with immediate effect, citing a desire to protect the association’s credibility. The FAM has since appealed to FIFA and CAS for further action.

In related news, FIFA’s disciplinary committee also changed the results of three friendlies played by the suspended players, declaring them lost by forfeit. The FAM was sanctioned with a fine of 10,000 Swiss Francs ($13,060) in connection with these matches.
