A man has died from injuries sustained in a shark attack off Rottnest Island, west of Perth, Western Australia. The incident occurred at approximately 10am local time on Saturday. According to authorities, the victim was taken by boat to Geordie Bay Jetty, where medical personnel and law enforcement performed life-saving measures.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has confirmed that the shark involved in the attack measured four metres in length and was identified as a long great white. The incident marks the first reported fatality from a shark attack in Western Australia since March last year.
This event follows a series of shark attacks along Australia’s eastern coast earlier this year, which led to the closure of several New South Wales beaches. In September, a fatal shark attack occurred off a Sydney beach, resulting in the death of an experienced surfer in his 50s. A similar incident in 2022 claimed the life of a 35-year-old British diving instructor off the city.
According to data from Australia’s Institute of Health and Welfare, most shark attacks occur along the east and southeast seaboard of Australia, with an average of 20 incidents reported annually.
