Memphis Grizzlies Forward Brandon Clarke Dies at Age 29

Memphis Grizzlies Player Brandon Clarke Dies at 29

Brandon Clarke, an NBA player for the Memphis Grizzlies, has died at the age of 29. The cause of death is currently unknown.

Clarke was pronounced dead at a residence in California’s San Fernando Valley after emergency workers responded to a call for help. The Grizzlies released a statement expressing their sadness over his passing, describing him as an “outstanding teammate and an even better person.”

Born in Vancouver, Canada, Clarke was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 21st overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft. His rights were later traded to Memphis on draft night. He played his entire NBA career with the Grizzlies, earning recognition as a member of the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2020.

In recent years, Clarke’s appearances were limited due to injuries, including knee, calf, and Achilles issues. He played only two games during the 2025-26 season. The NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also released a statement, saying that Clarke was “a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit.”

Clarke’s agency, Priority Sports, described him as “the gentlest soul” whose life touched many people. He had recently been arrested in Arkansas on charges of speeding and possession of a controlled substance, but was released on bond shortly after.

Clarke signed a multiyear contract extension with the Grizzlies in October 2022. Over his seven seasons with the team, he averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds.
