Men Caught Competing as Women in Prestigious South African Marathon

Two Men Disqualified from South Africa’s Two Oceans Marathon

On April 12, two men, Luke Jacobs and Nic Bradfield, were disqualified from the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town after finishing in the top 10 of the women’s race. The incident occurred when it was discovered that Jacobs had swapped his bib with a woman’s bib, while Bradfield had also switched his bib with another woman’s.

The marathon board member, Stuart Mann, uncovered the deception and subsequently disqualified the two men. As a result, the women who were initially bumped from their legitimate finishes were recognized for their achievements.

Jacobs and Bradfield will face disciplinary processes by the marathon’s disciplinary subcommittee. The incident highlights the risks associated with bib swapping, which can pose health and medical risks in case of an emergency.

According to Mann, exchanging bibs can be done for various reasons, including avoiding financial losses if injured or unable to participate. However, it is considered unethical and can result in penalties, including two-year bans from the marathon.

The incident also involved modern sports technology, as data from chips in the bibs indicated that two other women had crossed the finish line, although they were not observed by officials. Tegan Garvey admitted to giving up her bib due to a hip problem, while Larissa Parekh’s actions remain unclear.

Both Jacobs and Bradfield have apologized for their actions, and both women involved will face disciplinary action from the Two Oceans Marathon.
