Mexican authorities confirm death of notorious drug cartel leader El Mencho

Mexican Security Forces Kill Notorious Drug Lord in Operation Against Cartel Leader

A major military operation in Jalisco’s Tapalpa town resulted in the death of Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho”, a high-ranking member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The Mexican Secretariat of National Defence confirmed that seven other members of the cartel were killed during the raid. The operation has led to widespread violence in several states, including Jalisco, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta.

According to reports, torched cars and gunmen have blocked highways in over half a dozen states, while school was canceled on Monday in several states. The Mexican National Guard and Army troops are mobilizing to reinforce security in the affected areas.

The US Embassy in Mexico has warned American citizens to stay at home due to ongoing security operations and related criminal activity. Washington had offered a $15 million reward for information leading to Oseguera’s arrest, which was reportedly fulfilled by the Mexican operation.

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her government is responding to the unrest, emphasizing that normal activities are proceeding in most areas of the country. The Secretariat of National Defence has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Mexico’s security.

The killing of Oseguera marks a significant blow to drug trafficking in recent years and has been welcomed by US officials. However, concerns have been raised about the potential for retaliation from cartel members.
