US Prosecutors Unseal Indictment Charging Ruben Rocha and Nine Others in Sinaloa Cartel Case
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed skepticism about the US claims that Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha collaborated with the Sinaloa drug cartel. In a statement, Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of evidence-based accusations, stating that her administration will not shield anyone who commits a crime unless proven guilty.
US prosecutors have unsealed an indictment in New York charging Rocha and nine current and former officials with alleged links to the Sinaloa Cartel. The indictment alleges that the group worked together to move large quantities of narcotics into the US in exchange for political support and bribes. It also accuses members of the cartel’s “Chapitos” faction of interfering in Rocha’s 2021 gubernatorial campaign, including stealing ballots and ballot boxes.
Rocha has denied the allegations, calling them unfounded and politically driven. He stated that he will challenge the charges and demonstrate their lack of basis. The indictment comes amid a broader US crackdown on senior figures within the Sinaloa Cartel, including members of the “Chapitos” faction.
Mexican authorities have arrested key figures in connection with the cartel, including Ovidio Guzman and Joaquin Guzman Lopez. Longtime cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada is also currently in US custody. Rocha’s alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel are a significant development in the case.
The reaction of the Sheinbaum administration will be closely watched, as analysts believe that extraditing the indicted officials could provide US authorities with valuable insight into alleged corruption within the government and the Morena party.
