Middle East conflict disrupts global Formula One racing schedule

Multiple sports tournaments across the globe have been impacted by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The United States and Israel’s attack on Iran on Saturday led to Tehran responding with missile and drone attacks on Israel and various military bases in the region where US forces operate. Iranian missiles and drones have targeted several countries, including Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Manama, and parts of Saudi Arabia.

As a result, sports organizations and event organizers have taken measures to ensure athlete safety. A tennis tournament in the United Arab Emirates was halted due to falling debris from a drone interception at an oilfield approximately 13km away. The ATP Challenger-level event in Fujairah was suspended, with players scrambling for shelter during the incident.

The cancellation of the tournament and subsequent evacuation of players without cost have been reported. Football tournaments have also been affected, with the Asian Football Confederation postponing next week’s Asian Champions League matches scheduled in the Middle East until further notice. The Qatar Football Association has suspended all matches in the country, while UEFA is awaiting a final decision on hosting the Finalissima football match between Argentina and Spain.

Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026 remains uncertain, and it is unclear whether Iraq will be able to travel for their playoff game. The conflict has thrown sports events into chaos, with many athletes and officials left wondering about the future of their tournaments.
