Migrants hold protest in southern Mexico against new immigration laws

A March by Migrants and Asylum Seekers Takes Place in Mexico

Approximately 500 migrants and asylum seekers have begun a march in southern Mexico, with the group departing from Tapachula on Tuesday night and continuing their journey into Wednesday. The procession followed the typical route taken by many migrants and asylum seekers entering Mexico.

The demonstration was organized to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those seeking to apply for legal status in Mexico. Participants cited long lines and restrictions on movement as obstacles to finding employment and accessing legitimate immigration pathways.

Some individuals reported being asked to pay nearly $2,300 for documentation that is legally free in Mexico. Advocates also expressed concerns over increased militarization near Mexico’s borders, which they believe poses a threat to the safety of migrants and asylum seekers.

The march coincides with reports suggesting a potential secret deportation agreement between the US and Mexico. A US District Judge in Boston questioned this claim, seeking clarification on whether such an agreement exists and is being kept secret.

In recent months, the Trump administration has sought to have non-citizen deportees taken by third-party countries. Additionally, the US has restricted fuel imports to Cuba since January, aiming to destabilize the country’s government.
