Republican Candidate Drops Out of Minnesota Governor’s Race Over ICE Operation
Chris Madel, a Republican candidate for governor of Minnesota, has announced his withdrawal from the campaign citing concerns over the impact of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) “Operation Metro Surge” on Minneapolis. The operation, which began in December, has been linked to two fatalities involving federal agents.
Madel stated that he cannot support the party’s stance on the issue, as it appears to be targeting citizens rather than focusing on public safety threats. He also expressed concerns over the use of civil warrants by ICE agents to raid homes without proper authorization.
The decision comes after US Border Patrol agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, while he was filming an Operation Metro Surge patrol in Minneapolis. The incident sparked widespread outrage and questions about the handling of the situation by top White House officials, including Kristi Noem, who heads the Department of Homeland Security.
Noem and her department were criticized for their response to the shooting, with some Republicans expressing disagreement with the characterization of Pretti’s actions at the scene. Video evidence shows that CBP agents disarmed Pretti before shooting him multiple times.
Madel’s decision is seen as a rare instance of Republican opposition to ICE operations in Minnesota. The Democratic Party in the state is currently embroiled in a corruption scandal, which may have contributed to Madel’s decision to step down from the campaign.
