Moderate Democrats Primary Loss Blamed on AIPAC Backlash

Tom Malinowski Concedes Defeat in New Jersey Primary, Citing Influence of AIPAC-Backed Ads

Washington, DC – Tom Malinowski, a moderate Democrat, has conceded defeat to progressive Analilia Mejia in the primary election for the United States House of Representatives in New Jersey. The outcome marks a significant shift in the state’s congressional delegation and raises questions about the influence of pro-Israel organizations on Democratic candidates.

Malinowski, who had previously received support from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), ran on a platform that suggested conditions could be placed on US aid to Israel. However, his stance was met with an onslaught of targeted attack advertisements from the United Democracy Project (UDP), a super PAC linked to AIPAC.

According to officials, Mejia leads by about 900 votes as of Tuesday, five days after the February 5 Democratic primary. Tahesha Way came in third, despite having been endorsed by conservative Israeli media in the final stretch of the race.

In his concession statement, Malinowski acknowledged the role AIPAC played in the outcome, stating that “the massive flood of dark money” spent on ads was a significant factor. He also praised Mejia for running a positive campaign and inspiring voters.

Mejia’s victory has been seen as a blow to AIPAC’s strategy of using unlimited dark money to influence elections. The organization had previously supported Malinowski, who described himself as “pro-Israel.” However, his stance on US aid to Israel was met with criticism from some Democrats, including Representative Brad Schneider and Congressman Mark Pocan.

The outcome of the primary has significant implications for Mejia’s upcoming special election in April, where she will face two Republicans.
