Morocco Walks Off as Senegal Wins AFCON 2025 Title

Senegal Wins Africa Cup of Nations Title After Extra-Time Penalty Decision

In a dramatic turn of events, Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday. The match went into extra time after a penalty award against Senegal was disputed by the team’s players and coach. The controversy began when Moroccan player Brahim Diaz missed a penalty attempt in normal time, following a VAR check that awarded the penalty to Senegal.

Senegal’s players stormed off the field in protest before returning to play in extra time. Midfielder Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in the 94th minute, beating Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with a strike into the top corner. The goal came after Morocco’s star player Diaz had squandered his chance to win it for the home side.

The match was marked by chaotic scenes, including officials and players jostling with each other while the referee consulted the touchline screen. Senegal’s coach Pape Bouna Thiaw ordered his players off the field in protest before they returned to play.

Morocco had been seeking their first Africa Cup of Nations title since 1976, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Senegal’s victory marks their second Cup of Nations title in three editions, following their win over Egypt in 2022.

The team will now head to the United States for the World Cup in June, where they will look to build on their success. The incident during the match will be investigated, focusing on the conduct of Senegal’s players and fans as well as any shortcomings by Moroccan organizers.

Senegal’s Iliman Ndiaye had a chance to score early in the match but was denied by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Morocco also had opportunities to score before Diaz’s penalty attempt. The team will now look forward to their next tournament, with star player Sadio Mane declaring that the final would be his last game at the tournament.
