US Public Divided on Venezuelan Leader’s Abduction

A recent poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos has found that Americans are evenly split in their opinions on the US military operation to abduct Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The survey revealed that 33% of respondents support the abduction, while 34% oppose it and 32% remain undecided.

The poll also showed a significant partisan divide, with supporters of President Donald Trump’s Republican Party more likely to favor the operation (65%). In contrast, only 11% of Democrats and 23% of independents shared this view. On the other hand, 43% of respondents oppose Washington taking control of Venezuela until a new government is established in Caracas.

Regarding US involvement in Venezuela, 47% of Americans are opposed to stationing troops in the country, while 30% support it. Furthermore, 46% of respondents are against the Trump administration’s plan to take control of Venezuela’s oil fields.

The poll also found that 72% of Americans are concerned about the US becoming “too involved” in Venezuela. Maduro, who was abducted by US special forces over the weekend, appeared in court on Monday to face charges related to narcotics trafficking and weapons possession. He pleaded not guilty to all charges, claiming he was a victim of kidnapping.

Maduro’s deputy, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, was sworn in as interim president on Monday. The situation remains fluid, with Maduro facing the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
